The health indices in Kerala are comparable to those of Western world. The motto of “ Quality care at Low Cost “ has lead to this. The standard of medical education delivery system in the state is one of the major factors which helped in achieving this goal. The Directorate of Medical Education functions under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of Kerala. This Directorate plays a pivotal role in developing medical and allied health personnel to cater for the health needs of the state. This is accomplished by establishing and maintaining well equipped teaching institutions. The Govt Medical Colleges under the department are premier referral centres with state of the art equipment and technology. Various research projects are also being carried out under the department with additional funding from SBMR and ICMR. Medical Education in Kerala started in 1951 with the establishment of first Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram. Medical College Kozhikode was established in 1957. Later on other twelve medical colleges were added. The Directorate of Medical Education was established in 1983 with late Dr Korah as the first Director.
