Kerala boasts of the best health statistics in India comparable to those in the Western world and also of “quality care at low cost”. If we analyze the factors responsible for this, definitely the standard of medical education delivery system in the State comes out to be one of the major factors in achieving this goal. The doctors, paramedics and nurses passing out from our Colleges have performed excellently wherever they have gone - to the West, to Gulf or even to the remotest corner of the State/Country. Human development and enhancing the quality of life of the people are the ultimate objectives of all activities of the Government. Quality of life and development can be achieved only with healthy mind and body. Health is the vital ingredient of all developmental activities. The State needs a well qualified manpower to handle the health related problems and promotion of positive health. The Department of Medical Education plays a pivotal role in developing medical and para-medical personnel to cater to the health needs of the State. The department also has a role to play in establishment and maintenance of well-equipped teaching institutions, which are the premier referral centres with state of the art equipment and technology. Research is another area of activity for Medical Education Department. Medical Education in Kerala started in 1951 with the establishment of the first Medical College in Trivandrum in 1951. Soon Medical College, Calicut was established in 1957. Later, Medical College, Kottayam was started in 1962. TD Medical College, Alleppey was one of the first Medical College to be set up in the private sector as early as 1963 and was later merged with the Govt. Medical College. Trichur Medical College was started in 1982 with an admitting strength of 80 now being raised to 150.
Similarly we have 3 Dental Colleges in the State. The Dental College at Trivandrum was started in 1959 followed by Dental College at Calicut in 1979 and Kottayam in 2001. We have 5 Nursing Colleges at Trivandrum, Calicut, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Thrissur with 3 Nursing School at Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode for SC/ST students and Kottayam for ST students.
The College of Pharmacy at Trivandrum is functioning from1967. The department of Pharmacy at Medical College, Calicut is also running the B.Pharm course since 2000.
The Directorate of Medical Education was established in 1983 with the Late Dr. C.V. Korah as the first Director of Medical Education of the State.
